nic.at Internet Verwaltungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft m.b.H. is the official registry for all domains ending with .at, .co.at and .or.at. The abbreviation NIC stands for Network Information Center. In the middle of 1998, the nic.at was established by the ISPA (association of the Internet Service Providers Austria), which was also the owner of nic.at until the year 2000. In 2001 a limited liability company was founded and transferred into the non-profit Internet Foundation Austria. The technical operation of the .at-zone has remained with the Vienna University Computer Center (ZID). Today nic.at manages more than a million .at domains.

The Vienna Internet eXchange (VIX) is a redundant, dual-site, high-performance, high-availability Internet Exchange Point (IXP) with national and international participants from the Central and Eastern European Region. The Vienna Internet eXchange (VIX) is operated by the Vienna University Computer Center since 1996. It is a neutral peering infrastructure for National Research & Education Networks (NRENs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Content Providers and Content Delivery Networks in Austria and the Central and Eastern European Region for the exchange of Internet traffic at the national and international level.

With more than 70 scientific staff, the Institute of Telecommunications is one of the largest in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Vienna University of Technology.
